Cluster Fly Treatment

Although cluster flies are harmless, finding them on your property can be unsettling. While methods like vacuuming or using home pest control kits can help, these are often the least effective solutions.

At Able, we treat cluster flies after they have been present for at least seven days. This allows the flies to gather fully, ensuring that the treatment will affect the entire population.

The treatment method we use involves ‘fogging’ the affected area with an insecticide. Once the insecticide has taken effect, the pest controller can safely remove the dead flies with a vacuum cleaner.

Controlling Cluster Fly Infestations
Seal up entry points
You can help getting rid of cluster flies by sealing all potential entry points like gaps, cracks, and small holes.
Swat them
Swatting cluster flies is a natural way to get rid of them. However, to finish the job, you’ll need to vacuum thoroughly. While squishing the occasional fly may not be a big deal, dealing with a large number of them this way can leave unsightly stains. For a more effective solution, our professional pest control services eliminate flies quickly and efficiently—targeting not only the adult flies but also their eggs, ensuring the entire lifecycle is treated.
Spray them
Store-bought fly killer sprays can provide temporary relief for a cluster fly infestation, but they only address the immediate issue. For a thorough and lasting solution, we recommend our professional pest control specialists.
The signs of a cluster fly infestation
Large clusters of flies
The main sign of a cluster fly infestation is seeing a large number of flies, dead or alive.
Cluster flies are sluggish compared to houseflies, so you might see slow-moving flies often clustering near windows or in attics, lofts, and wall voids.
A sweet sickly smell
A sweet, sickly smell could indicate that you are dealing with cluster flies. This is caused by the saliva they deposit on the walls, which acts as a marker for other flies.
Yellow stains
Yellow stains on walls are a common sign of a cluster fly infestation, caused by the yellow saliva that flies deposit as they land on surfaces like walls. Their waste can leave tiny black specks on windowsills and walls, similar to houseflies.
Flies Around Light Sources
Cluster flies are attracted to light and warmth, so if you notice a group of flies around light sources or windows, you could be dealing with a cluster fly infestation.

What Do Cluster Flies Look Like?

Cluster flies are relatively small, with adults averaging 8 to 10 mm in length, yet they are still larger than common house flies. They are distinguished by their dark grey colour with a yellowish tint. Their slow, sluggish flight makes them easier to swat or capture compared to other species of fly.
