Celebrating Creativity: Our Partnership with Havens Hospices and Artist Charlie Stafford

At Able Group, community partnerships are at the heart of what we do. This year, one of the most exciting projects we’ve been involved in is Waddle-on-Sea, Havens Hospices’ 2025 art trail. The event brought Southend to life with a flock of beautifully designed penguin sculptures, each painted by a talented local artist and sponsored by a local business.

We were proud to be a main partner of the trail and even prouder to collaborate with Charlie Stafford, the creative mind behind our design, Wild.

The trail officially ran throughout the summer and came to an end on 3rd September, but the story doesn’t stop there. The penguins will now go under the hammer at a charity auction on 25th September, with all proceeds going directly to support Havens Hospices’ vital work.

Before all trail, we sat down with Charlie to learn more about her journey as an artist, her inspiration for Wild, and her experience of working with Able Group.

Interview with Local Artist Charlie Stafford

Can you tell us a bit about where you're from and how it influences your work?

I was born and raised in a small town called Ashingdon based in Rochford, Essex. As a kid I loved being around nature, always outside mucking about with my brother or creating masterpieces that I am sure my family appreciated at the time. Growing up in such a small rural town meant there were no art opportunities and opportunities to be immersed in art and culture.

Now, I am a professional female artist who has been working in the Creative industry for over 9 years, often working with universities on lecture talks about the Creative Industry and creating bespoke commissions for business’ both local and international.

Inspiration for my work comes from regenerative and sustainable practice as well as teaching the next generation of creatives. I want my work to convey a feeling of hope and emotion which connects the viewer to the artwork. I strongly believe my work is influenced by making art free and accessible for all.

At what age did you first develop an interest in art?

I have had a passion for art forever. I knew from a very young age that my purpose in this world was to create beautiful things, to teach and to mentor the next generation of creatives. I just think the world is better with art!

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your career in art?

I am a female artist in a very male dominated industry. I come from a very low-income, working-class background who was raised by a single parent, in a small town where opportunities were limited. I have had to work hard to be where I am today and I am extremely proud of who I am and the name I have made for myself within the creative industry. I started at what some would say is a disadvantage, but I was focused, driven and did not take my eye off the end goal.

Did anyone play a key role in supporting or mentoring you along the way? What have been your biggest artistic inspirations?

I have had some incredible mentors, from my art teachers at secondary school, more specifically Mr Dawson who saw potential in me, to having the opportunity to be mentored by Kerry Lemon; a well-known artist (an opportunity that came after I completed my BA degree in Art at Writtle College).

Throughout everything, the support I received from my mum and nan meant the world to me—they were truly my backbone.

How did you first get involved with Havens Hospices?

I have a strong connection to Havens Hospices as I currently volunteer my time at Little Havens running art classes and memory making classes for children and their families who are in palliative care. I had previously painted an elephant sculpture for the Herd in The City trail back in 2022 and volunteered some of my time since then.

What do you enjoy most about participating in art trails?

Allowing different communities to come together and be a part of an art trail that is free and accessible for all is so important, rewarding and really aligns with my own ethos as an artist. Obviously, I LOVE the painting process but personally when you see children go, ‘WOW’ at the towering sculptures. Their faces lit up with inspiration and joy when they see them—it’s priceless!

Do you have a particular time of day when you feel most creative?

The evenings and night!

Can you share the inspiration behind your penguin design, Wild?

My inspiration for the penguin sculpture, Wild, reflects the natural beauty and powerful energy of Southend-on-Sea’s landscape. The waves symbolise change, emotional depth, and the peace that follows—all mirroring the care and support provided by Havens Hospices. Just as the sea shapes the shore, Havens Hospices brings compassion and strength to those they care for. This sculpture stands as a tribute to the spirit of Southend-on-Sea and the transformative impact of hospice care in our community.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists in Southend?

Go out there, network as much as possible and just say YES to every opportunity that comes your way.

What has it been like working with Able Group so far?

Able Group has been an amazing sponsor, and working with them has been a truly positive experience. They share the same values and ethos as I do, which has made our collaboration feel genuine and aligned. Their existing connections to Havens make the partnership an even better fit, strengthening the sense of purpose behind the sculpture Wild. It has been a pleasure to work with them!

Looking Ahead

Working with Charlie on Wild has been a fantastic experience.  Her creativity, passion, and strong connection to Havens Hospices made this collaboration even more meaningful.

While the Waddle-on-Sea trail has now officially finished, the journey continues as the penguins prepare for the charity auction on 25th September. Every bid will help raise vital funds for Havens Hospices, supporting the incredible work they do to provide free, specialist care for children, adults, and families living with incurable conditions.

We’re proud to have played a small part in this inspiring project and can’t wait to see the legacy of Wild live on in its forever home.

Who knows where it might end up – we will keep you all posted!
